Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The characters that make up Japan's name mean "sun-origin", which is why Japan is sometimes referred to as the "Land of the Rising Sun". Japan is an archipelago of 6,852 islands. The four largest islands are Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū and Shikoku, together accounting for 97% of Japan's land area. Most of the islands are mountainous, many volcanic; for example, Japan’s highest peak, Mount Fuji, is a volcano. Japan has the world's tenth-largest population, with over 127 million people. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes the de facto capital city of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents. Archaeological research indicates that people were living on the islands of Japan as early as the Upper Paleolithic period. The first written mention of Japan begins with brief appearances in Chinese history texts from the first century A.D. Influence from the outside world followed by long periods of isolation has characterized Japan's history. Since adopting its constitution in 1947, Japan has maintained a unitary constitutional monarchy with an emperor and an elected parliament called the Diet. A major economic power, Japan has the world's second-largest economy by nominal GDP and the third largest in purchasing power parity. It is also the world's fourth largest exporter and fifth largest importer. It is also the only Asian country in the G8 and is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Although Japan has officially renounced its right to declare war, it maintains a modern and extensive military force which is employed in self-defense and peacekeeping roles. It is a developed country with very high living standards (10th highest HDI). Japan has the highest life expectancy of any country in the world (according to both the UN and WHO estimates) and the third lowest infant mortality rate. From Wikipedia under the

Germany & Italy were Facist in government and were preaching white supremancy. Japan held a feudal monarchy with a militaristic ruling class. Japan, it would seem, wouldn't fit with Hitler's view on race. What did either side gain by being allies? Asked by Sambo - Mon Nov 19 10:34:04 2007 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments A. well firstly the japanese and germans had quite similar racial outlooks - the germans believed in aryan ideal whilst japan taught that because they had never been colonized and they had an army that was unbeaten in any war throughout its history that they were in fact superior to any of the asian nations and had a right to create 'an east asian co-prosperity area' as they called it or japanese colonization of the pacific region has the west would put because they were racially better then any other asian group - this can be seen in there treatment of the indigineous chinese, filipino and burmese races. japan had a constitution and government modelled on that of germany. japan and germany had long been in contact with each other exchanging… [cont.] Answered by bradley - Mon Nov 19 11:20:07 2007 How does texting to Japan differ from texting to people in your own country? Answered by BW - Sat Jun 21 15:37:35 2008 What music college in Japan doesn't require a person to speak Japanese?
Q. Okay so I'm planning on taking high school Japanese all four years but I don't think I'll be fluent by the time I graduate. I want to major in music and study in Japan. Is there any college there that doesn't require you to speak Japanese or offers a course to improve your Japanese? Asked by Makana - Sat Aug 22 15:48:51 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. As far as I know, Japanese university admission requires passing the level 1 JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test). Anyway, if you went without understanding Japanese, you...wouldn't be able to understand anything. It's possible to get a visa to study Japanese there, though, so perhaps do your best to learn now, immerse yourself for a few months (after high school), take the test, and then apply to university.
